In a context in which several countries, including neighbouring South Africa, have detected new and more contagious Covid-19 variants, the Mozambican authorities say they are on the alert and have sent samples to South Africa and England for the purpose of identifying the new virus.
The concern was heightened after the country received a deluge of returning Mozambicans and tourists visiting the country for Christmas and the end of the year.
“Mozambique has already sent samples to see whether or not we already have the new coronavirus variant. This material was sent to two countries with the capacity to analyse these variants,” Minister of Health Armindo da Saúde said, while cautioning that there was “no prediction as to when we will have the results”.
Minister Tiago also commented on the new daily records of positive cases of the disease, saying that “this is likely the result of a relaxation” in complying with preventive measures over the festive period.
“Faced with this scenario, we should all as a society reflect on improving [our adherence to] prevention measures,” Minister Tiago said.
The minister was speaking to the press as he left the house of former minister and prominent politician Cadmiel Muthemba, where he presented his condolences to the family on the occasion of the statesman’s death.
