Just in: Covid-19 kills two-year-old girl, three men in Mozambique ~MISAU

Four people, including a two-year-old child, died from Covid-19 in the province of Nampula and in the city of Maputo, the Mozambican Ministry of Health reported today (January 7). [Read the full comunique, in Portuguese, HERE]

The death toll from COVID-19 now stands at 176.

The victims« are all Mozambican nationals – three men aged 28, 60 and 70 years old and a two-year-old girl.

The health of these patients worsened during hospitalisation, which led to their deaths. Three died on Wednesday and one died today, Thursday. Three died in the city of Maputo and one in Nampula province, reads a note from the Ministry of Health (MISAU).

Health authorities report that a further 294 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in Mozambique: 286 Mozambicans, seven foreigners and one of a nationality yet to be determined.

,158 of the 294 newly diagnosed cases are in Maputo city, 45 are in Sofala province, 44 in Inhambane province, 27 in Cabo Delgado, eight in Zambézia, six in Manica province, three in Maputo province and three in Tete province.

“Thus, our country now has a cumulatively of 19,961 positive cases registered, of which 19,645 were transmitted locally and 316 imported,” writes MISAU in the statement.

From Wednesday to Thursday, a further 314 people recovered from COVID-19 infection.

310 of the newly-recovered patients are Mozambican citizens and four others are citizens whose nationality has not yet been identified by the authorities.

The total number of Covid-19 recoveries across the country now stands at 17,455, which corresponds to 87.4% of all those infected.

At the moment, there are 96 patients hospitalised with Covid-19, out of a total of 903 registered since the beginning of the pandemic in the country.

In Mozambique there are currently 2,326 active cases of COVID-19. The city of Maputo, has the highest number of active infections, with 1,544. It is followed by Maputo province, with 203 active cases and the remaining provinces have less than 140.
