The Mozambican police said on Monday that they shot dead a suspected insurgent informant in Quitunda, in the vicinity of natural gas megaprojects in Afungi, Palma district, in Cabo Delgado province.
The incident occurred Friday[January 1] in the Quitunda resettlement village, an area close to the megaprojects and which has been used to relocate the people living in the area that now houses the oil company Total, which is leading the project, said police spokesman in Cabo Delgado, Ernesto Madungue.
“The teams moved to the neighbourhood, when they arrived they were greeted by gunshots and obliged to open fire and from there an alleged terrorist informant was shot dead on the spot,” the spokesman said in a press conference.
According to Ernesto Madungue, the police came to the neighbourhood after learning that there were informants of the insurgent groups in three houses, and therefore organised teams to respond to the situation.
“An alleged terrorist also shot and injured one police officer who is currently receiving medical care in hospital,” he added.
In December, rebel groups that have been carrying out armed attacks in Cabo Delgado carried out at least two attacks close to the megaprojects led by France’s Total.
In a reaction note sent to Lusa, Total said it had temporarily reduced its workforce at the project site in response to the “prevailing environment,” adding that it was in “permanent contact” with the Mozambican authorities.
The project is the largest private investment in Africa, in the order of 20 billion euros.
The armed violence in Cabo Delgado began three years ago and is causing a humanitarian crisis with more than 2,000 deaths and 560,000 displaced people, without housing or food, mainly concentrated in the provincial capital, Pemba.

Some of the incursions have been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ Islamic state group since 2019.
The Southern African Development Community will meet this month to discuss the security situation in the region.
