A tropical cyclone is heading towards the Mozambican coast – but it might never reach Mozambique, since it has to cross Madagascar first.
According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), operated by the United States Navy, on Thursday Cyclone Chalane, was about 258 nautical miles (478 kilometres) north of Mauritius, heading west-southwest at a speed of nine knots (17 kilometres per hour). It was generating winds of up to 65 kilometres per hour.
On its current course, according to the JTWC, Chalane will make landfall on the eastern coast of Madagascar on Saturday night. It will then track across northern Madagascar, on a course that will bring it quite close to the capital, Antananarivo.
Cyclones lose strength over land, and so Chalane will slow down over Madagascar. But if it reaches the Mozambique Channel, the cyclone will intensify again, as it heads over open ocean towards Mozambique.
It is projected to hit the French possession of Europa Island on Tuesday, and by that time it will be having a severe effect on shipping in the Mozambique Channel.
Continuing on that course would mean making landfall in Mozambique a day or two later, somewhere near the mouth of the Zambezi river.
