The impact of brutal violence in northern Mozambique through the eyes of 10-year-old Maria. UNICEF is calling for the urgent protection of children like Maria, who are facing the devastating impacts of conflict, cyclones and COVID-19. As of December 2020, approximately 250,000 children have been displaced by the escalating crisis in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado.
UNICEF and its partners are running child friendly spaces where displaced children can sing, dance and play, while trained facilitators can identify those who need more specialised care. There is an urgent need to expand the network of trained case workers who can visit surviving children and their families at home to offer psycho-social support and referrals to protection and social services. As part of the Humanitarian Response Plan for Cabo Delgado, UNICEF is appealing for US$30 million to respond to the most urgent humanitarian needs in 2021.
