More than 600 health workers abandon jobs, 27 hospitals destroyed in Cabo Delgado violence – minister

A total of 641 health professionals have left their jobs due to armed violence in districts of Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique, the Minister for Health said.

The health professionals “have lost everything and are refugees in areas considered safe,” with 41 hospitals closed, of which 27 are destroyed, according to Armindo Tiago, cited on Tuesday by Televisão de Moçambique.

The armed violence in Cabo Delgado, where the largest private multinational investment in Africa is taking place, for the exploitation of natural gas, is causing a humanitarian crisis with over 2,000 deaths and 560,000 displaced people, without housing or food, mainly concentrated in the provincial capital, Pemba.

Some of the incursions have been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ Islamic state group since 2019.

The United Nations announced on Friday that it needed USD 254 million (207 million euros) to guarantee humanitarian assistance to people displaced by armed violence in Cabo Delgado.
