A bridge over the Nkalawe river in Mecula district was inaugurated this Sunday morning by the Secretary of State in the Province of Niassa, Dinis Vilanculo.
Budgeted at nearly six million meticais – provided by the Mozambican government – the bridge will solve chronic rainy season circulation constraints.
Speaking minutes after opening the bridge, Vilanculo called on local residents to cherish and preserve the new infrastructure.
Previously, when medical evacuation became necessary, the two districts of Mecula and Marrupa were obliged to combine efforts to save lives, relying on volunteers to carry patients on stretchers to ambulances sent by Marrupa as the only way for residents to receive adequate medical treatment.
“I would like to take this opportunity to raise people’s awareness of the need to increase their area under cultivation, as well as to be wary of water-borne diseases,” Vilanculo added.
He also asked those present to intensify their surveillance of individuals of dubious origin and conduct, in collaboration with local authorities.
