The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) says that some markets in the city of Maputo and the provinces of Inhambane, Niassa, Manica, Tete and Zambézia registered shortages of food products and price rises between the 8th and 14th of the current month. The entity promises that the situation will be remediated as soon as possible.
Among the scarce products are potatoes and eggs. Regarding price fluctuation, cooking oil rose from 120 to 130 meticais a litre in Niassa, and frozen chicken from 250 to 280 meticais in Tete.
A kilogram of horse mackerel fish increased from 130 to 150 meticais in Zambézia, while in Maputo, a 10 kg bag of onions went up from 150 to 270 meticais.
INAE spokesman Tomás Timba said that the institution was “in contact with the main suppliers, wholesalers, importers” with the aim of overcoming shortages of essential food products, and consumers should not panic.
The INAE also says that it is attentive to price speculation and the hoarding of basic products.
Timba further announced that, to ensure compliance with Covid-19 prevention measures during the festive season, there will be an intensification of inspection of ‘barracas’, leisure facilities and other commercial outlets.
