Mozambique: MSF suspends activities in Mocímboa da Praia as violence surges

Mozambican health authorities today (December 15) announced the death of one more person due to Covid-19 in the country, bringing the total of deaths due to this disease to 144. The Ministry of Health also reported a further 40 confirmed coronavirus cases.
The deadly victim is a 74-year-old Mozambican, who was admitted to a hospital in the city of Maputo, and whose health condition worsened, reads the MISAU communique.
The health authorities also announced another 40 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases registered in the country to 17,042, of which 16,729 are locally transmitted and 313 imported.
The country accounts for a total of 15,117 recoveries (88%).
Of the total of 1,777 active cases in Mozambique, the city of Maputo has 1,472, the highest number.
Mozambique has cumulatively tested 249,773 suspected cases of infection since the first case was announced on 22 March.

The Covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,621,397 deaths resulting from more than 72.7 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
Among Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registers 372 deaths and 16,277 cases, followed by Mozambique (144 deaths and 17,042 cases), Cape Verde (110 deaths and 11,361 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5,195 cases), Guinea-Bissau (44 deaths and 2,446 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1,009 cases).
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
