Mozambican police have arrested 46 illegal Ethiopian immigrants travelling in containers on long-haul trucks on the border with Malawi in Tete province, in the western interior of the country, the corporation has announced.
The truck driver and an alleged people smuggler were also detained, a police source quoted by Radio Mozambique today claims.
Three trucks and their containers were also seized, along with one million Malawian kwacha (about €1,075).
The detention of suspected illegal immigrants is frequent in Tete province, with many also dying in the attempt to enter the country.
In March, 64 Ethiopian immigrants were found asphyxiated in a container, along with 14 survivors, later repatriated, after illegally crossing the border from Malawi to Mozambique.
Two of the seven defendants in the case were convicted by Tete Judicial Court in October. The truck driver was sentenced to eight years in prison, and a guide to nine years, both for involuntary manslaughter
