João Ribeiro’s feature film won two awards at the Kisima 2020 Music & Film Awards in Kenya: Africa Best Director for João Ribeiro, and Best Supporting Actress for Ana Magaia.
An incredible year for ‘Granma Nineteen and the Soviet’s Secret’ by João Ribeiro. When 2020 started, right after the international and national premiere, things got complicated, and the film could no longer be shown in the theatres. Bad for the expectations of the director, the actors and all the technicians who were part of the production team. However, for the Mozambican feature film, 2020 is far from a year to be forgotten.
Two weeks after winning the Best Feature Film Prize in the seventh edition of Plateau – Praia International Film Festival in Cape Verde, João Ribeiro’s movie has again brought recognition to Mozambique. This time, a double dose. In Kenya yesterday, ‘Granma Nineteen and the Soviet’s Secret’ won the Kisima Music & Film Awards 2020 Best Director Award in Africa, for João Ribeiro, and Best Supporting Actress, for Ana Magaia.
João Ribeiro said the awards were good news “in a difficult year”. “I am proud to have worked with children who made a film for the first time. Fortunately, it went very well. We had a good story and managed to put on the screen what was intended.”
Even so, João Ribeiro confessed that he did not expect that this year would be so good for his film, because festival criteria had changed. Before, they focused on theatre projections while now they favour online sessions, which requires the filmmakers to adapt. Nevertheless, the double award in Kenya is a great way to end the year and start another one. “I really enjoyed making this film with children,” he reiterated. “In fact, I was the conductor and they were the orchestra.”
Regarding Ana Magaia’s award, Ribeiro said that she played a relatively small, but very relevant role. In the film, Ana Magaia is the grandmother (Catarina) of one of the characters. “Ana played a difficult role, and having achieved this visibility is important. She is an actress of recognised value and with a lot of experience.”
The good news for Mozambican cinema comes on a day when the U20 national team had an unprecedented win in the COSAFA tournament. And when it seemed that the day could offer no more, behold, from the land of Jomo Kenyatta arrived fresh air to minimize the effects of the harsh summer. Three trophies for the country in one day. An early Christmas gift?
Granma Nineteen and the Soviet’s Secret was nominated in five categories at Krisima, namely: Best Film, Best Director (João Ribeiro), Best Producer (Luís Galvão Teles, António Júnior and João Ribeiro), Best Leading Actor (Keanu dos Santos) and Best Supporting Actress (Ana Magaia). After nomination by a jury composed of 10 personalities from the world of arts and culture, online voting was opened up to the public.
