Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Thursday praised the courage of young members of the defence and security forces fighting terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado and the attacks perpetrated by the self-styled Renamo Military Junta in the centre of the country.
Speaking in Dondo, in Sofala province, at a “National Gala of Creative Youth”, which recognises the contribution of young Mozambicans to artistic creation and technological innovation, Nyusi announced that young people had been in the front line of a clash a few days ago which aborted a terrorist attempt to infiltrate the Afungi Peninsula, in Palma District. This is where the French oil and gas company, Total, is building Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) factories.

Nyusi thus confirmed reports of this clash carried by some of the Mozambican media on Wednesday and Thursday. According to these reports terrorists attacked the village of Mute, about 25 kilometres from Afungi on Tuesday. But, with helicopter support, the Mozambican defence and security forces drove the terrorists out of the village.
“Three days ago, the enemy wanted to approach Afungi”, said Nyusi. “But thanks to our young people they were unsuccessful. Our young fighters have been accepting their role in this combat. The defence forces are committed to a relentless struggle against the enemy in the two theatres of operation, in the north ad centre of the country”.

The President added that Mozambique is the target of large scale aggression by the terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado and by the Military Junta, headed by Mariano Nhongo, in Manica and Sofala, who are creating massive suffering and holding back development.
“The terrorists kill, using the cruelest methods, such as beheading citizens in front of their relatives”, Nyusi said. “They are kidnapping girls, and destroying public and private infrastructure, provoking generalised fear”.
During the Dondo ceremony, where prizes were awarded to young creative artists, Nyusi said that no prize can compensate for the efforts of young people who are sacrificing their own lives in defence of the higher interests of the nation.
“These are youths who, in the barracks and in the dense bush, on the roads and paths, on plains and plateaux, with gun in hand, are protecting the country from internal and external enemy forces”, he declared.
He appealed to young Mozambicans, particularly those living in the conflict areas, to remain attentive and to resist any attempt to recruit them by terrorist groups.
