Mozambique’s prime minister, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, on Thursday demanded an updated plan from the provincial government of Cabo Delgado for re-housing people displaced by violence in some districts of that province in northern Mozambique.
“The first priority must be food, water and sanitation to avoid cholera,” he said, speaking during a visit to the Ngalane reception centre, in Metuge district, Cabo Delgado province.
According to Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, the provincial government should update the plan for re-housing the population, adopting a strategy that prioritises the basic needs of the population.
“We want the province to update this resettlement plan taking into account these priorities. We want this plan to have a very clear timetable,” he stressed.
Cabo Delgado province, where the largest private investment in Africa is currently being made to exploit natural gas, has been under attack by insurgents for three years, and some of the incursions have been claimed by the ‘jihadist’ Islamic state group since 2019.
The armed violence in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, is causing a humanitarian crisis with around 2,000 deaths and 560,000 displaced people, without housing or food, mainly concentrated in the provincial capital, Pemba.
