After extensive refurbishment, Praça do Metical in the city of Beira was on Wednesday re-inaugurated, preceding that of the Beira branch of the Bank of Mozambique, presided over on Thursday by the President of the Republic.
The Praça do Metical ceremony, simple but full of symbolism, was led by mayor Daviz Simango, and the Central Bank governor Roéio Zandamlea.
The President of the Municipal Council of Beira, who unveiled a plaque and spoke of a place that would lend another aspect to the provincial capital of Sofala.
The Praça do Metical, praised by citizens of Beira as bringing another beauty spot to the city, is the first of a project to site Metical Squares in all provincial capitals.
The Praça do Metical’s central monument, whose author is not mentioned in the Miramar report, represents the ideal of the Bank of Mozambique, and appreciation of the metical as the Mozambican monetary unit.
