At least 10 people have died in Zambézia during rainstorms there, most of them under trees or unprepared, and the target of lightning strikes. More than three members of the same family lost their lives in a single incident.
The police urge communities to avoid exposure to lightning strikes in these weather conditions.
The rains in Quelimane city have constrained access to some neighbourhoods, with houses submerged by rising water levels and families forced to abandon their homes.
Rapaio Domingos, a resident of the city’s Manhaua B neighbourhood, says that his children had to go to his brother’s house, as their own home became unsafe due to flood waters.
There has been rain across all districts in the province, with mountainous areas registering most deaths from lightning strikes.
