Mozambique’s Ministry of Health yesterday reported three more Covid-19 deaths, bringing the cumulative death toll to 136, with 82 new cases.
Three Mozambican men, aged 43, 63 and 75, died over Sunday/Monday in hospital units in the city of Maputo, Deputy Director of Public Health Benigna Matsinhe said during an update at the Ministry of Health in the Mozambican capital.
With the 82 new infections announced yesterday, the total number of cases registered in the country rose to 16,326, of which 16,013 are locally transmitted and 313 imported. A total of 14,429 (88%) people are reported to have recovered from the infection.
Mozambique has tested 239,164 suspected cases of infection since the first case was announced on 22 March. Of the total 1,757 active cases in Mozambique, Maputo, the country’s capital, has the largest number, with 1,459 active cases.
The Covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 1,535,987 deaths from more than 67 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by French agency AFP.
In Africa, there are 53,853 confirmed deaths among the more than 2.2 million people infected in 55 countries, according to the latest statistics.
Angola has recorded 354 deaths among its 15,591 cases, followed by Mozambique (136 deaths and 16,326 cases), Cape Verde (109 deaths and 11,063 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5,159 cases), Guinea-Bissau (44 deaths and 2,441 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 997 cases).
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
