Mélio João Tinga (Maputo, 1994) has won the 4th edition of the Imprensa Nacional/Eugénio Lisboa Literary Prize. The prize includes the publishing of the winning work, as well as a monetary prize of €5,000.00.
The jury, consisting of Mozambican poet and editor Mbate Pedro as president, together with Sara Jona Laisse and Paula Mendes, awarded the literary prose prize to “Marizza”, by Mélio João Tinga, with an honourable mention for “Eva”, by Léo Cote.
The attribution of the prize to “Marizza” is due, the jury said, to the creativity with which the author approaches a daily subject and to the aesthetic quality and innovation of the work, a cohesive and coherent narrative, in which the form overlaps the content. The literary quality of the writing, permeated by remarkable poetic resonances, stands out. “Marizza” helps us to reflect on the place of literature and culture in modern times.
The honourable mention given to the text “Eva” is due to the current thematic and the way in which the author approaches the female universe in a patriarchal society and a context of profound social inequalities.
A total of 42 texts competed for the 4th edition of the Imprensa Nacional/Eugénio Lisboa Award, created in 2017 by the National Press Casa da Moeda, embodying its mission of promoting and preserving the Portuguese language and taking into account the relevance of founder Eugénio Lisboa as a citizen and man of culture born in Mozambique.
The Imprensa Nacional/Eugénio Lisboa Prize select unpublished works of great quality in the field of literary prose and, in addition to a pecuniary component, envisions the publication of the works, thus encouraging Mozambican literary creation.
