Corruption in Mozambique remains unchecked. In 2016, the country registered 493 cases, the number rising to 695 in 2017. The following year, there were 761 cases, only three less than in 2019. This year, 340 cases were registered in the first half alone.
In five years, the State has suffered damages amounting to 2,674,972,380.28 meticais [around US$36 million], Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs Helena Kida told the opening of the Coordinating Council of the Ministry of Justice.
She did not provide details such as the sectors with most cases or the amounts involved, but said that sectors needed to refine and improve strategies, and that justice was an example of good practices and transparency in management, ethics and probity.
The institution’s inspectorate must therefore lead the process in collaboration with other similar areas and ethics commissions, she said.
Helena Kida also mentioned International Human Rights Day on Thursday, 10 December, when Mozambique will present its report under the Third Cycle of Evaluation of the Universal Periodic Review Mechanism to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Helena Kida said that the country’s vulnerability to floods, cyclones and drought, together with political and military conflicts in the centre of the country, terrorism in Cabo Delgado and the Covid-19 pandemic, had all contributed to the violation of human rights.
The problems listed by the Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs had compromised the implementation of the recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review Mechanism on the promotion and protection of human rights in Mozambique, she said.
Helena Kida took the opportunity to express solidarity with the victims of terrorism, including colleagues working in areas affected by the phenomenon.
