The Mozambican government on Friday warned of the risk that the armed attacks in Cabo Delgado would spread throughout the region, reinforcing the request for support in view of the humanitarian situation in northern Mozambique.
“Their containment and eradication from our homeland soil is urgent, before their potential development and spreading to other regions,” Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Verónica Macamo told a meeting in Maputo with United Nations agencies working in Mozambique.
The minister said it was “necessary to nip this evil in the bud” and for the international community to “bluntly condemn” attacks by armed groups in northern Mozambique.
“The international community must be with us and help us, because this is necessary to [ensure] that those acts do not consolidate and affect other countries in our region and beyond,” Minister Macamo said.

At another meeting in Maputo on Friday, Minister Macamo asked for additional help combatting the attacks in Cabo Delgado, the situation being a priority for the country.
It was important to train young people and create jobs in the north of Mozambique to prevent them being lured in by insurgent groups, she said.
“We are extremely concerned about the emergency, with people leaving their homes and abandoning the fruits of years of effort and even their livelihoods, and moving to places considered safe,” Verónica Macamo said during a meeting with Princess Sarah Zeid of Jordan.
