Mozambique: Bodies of three terrorist victims discovered in Mocímboa da Praia
Screen grab: TVM
Despite being incomplete and reaching us only slowly, the information available suggests a savage, bloody and brutal terrorist action, MediaFax reports.
They killed and dismembered, kidnapped people and destroyed public and private infrastructure such as the brand new Muidumbe District Government building, as well as the facilities of the local Catholic church and the community radio station it managed.
Citing people who have managed to visit some of the severely hit villages, including the district headquarters, the priest of the Sagrado Coração de Jesus parish describes a desolate scenario of infrastructure destruction and scattered corpses in a state of advanced decomposition.
“Community leaders report that, along the way, they found many corpses already decomposing, and that massacres took place. The terrorists’ actions are violent, many people have been beheaded, houses burned or demolished,” writes Father Edegard Silva Júnior, a Brazilian, of the La Salette Missionaries in Muidumbe (Nangololo) mission, the second oldest in the diocese of Pemba, Cabp Deçgado.
The description is included in a note on the attacks and the plight of internally displaced people in an appeal for international solidarity.
For the Catholic priest, the pain is felt not only by the missionaries, but is etched on the faces of all those who saw and continue to see what they have built over the course of their lives destroyed in an instant by terrorist action.
Families continue to search for relatives missing since the invasion of at least 12 villages in Muidumbe.
Hundreds of villages in districts in the centre and north of Cabo Delgado are currently uninhabited because of deteriorating security conditions resulting from the intensification of armed attacks attributed to terrorist groups.
