Legally constituted civil society organisations, whether integrated into forums or individual, have 15 days to submit their lists of candidates for the selection of seven members to join the National Elections Commission (CNE).
Applications addressed to the president of the Assembly of the Republic Ad Hoc Commission created for this purpose must be submitted to the general secretariat at parliament headquarters in Maputo, or to the provincial delegations, within the established deadline.
Each list must contain a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 16 names of candidates, who must be Mozambicans over 25 years of age, “of recognised moral and professional merit, able to perform their duties with integrity, independence, impartiality, exemption, objectivity, competence and zeal”.
The president of the Ad Hoc Commission, António Amélia, said at the launch of the process yesterday in Maputo that candidates must present authenticated curriculum vitae, criminal record certificates and a copy of their birth certificate when submitting proposals.
In addition to the president, rapporteur José Manteigas and members Lucília Hama, José Domingos and Gonçalves Maceda make up the Ad Hoc Commission, which has a 30-day mandate.
After receiving the applications, the working group will have 15 days to choose the seven candidates who will occupy the seats reserved for civil society at the CNE.
José Amélia said that the launch of the contest for the selection of the seven CNE members was part of the democratic exercise wherein citizens were called upon to make their contribution to the consolidation of the rule of law through participation in this body, essential to the life of the country.
Amelia called for civil society organisations to comply with the legally scheduled deadlines, so as to allow the commission to carry out its work within the mandate and achieve the expected results.
He called on all organisations to participate, inviting everyone who met the requisite conditions to submit their candidacy, saying: “It is the right and duty of citizens to participate in the life of the country.”
