A Traffic Police officer and a driver have been arrested in Beira for alleged bribery, the Provincial Office for Combating Corruption in Sofala accusing the officer of accepting 100 meticais from the motorist.
The Traffic Police agent was arrested at the Inhamízua checkpoint outside Beira on Tuesday afternoon after he accepted 100 meticais from a driver, supposedly so that it he [the police officer] would not inspect the driver’s vehicle.
Both the Traffic Police officer and the driver deny the incident, saying they were surprised by the investigative agents of the Provincial Anti- Corruption Office in Sofala.
Sofala Office for Combating Corruption spokesperson Anastâncio Matsinhe said that Traffic Police agents soliciting bribes was common in checkpoints throughout the province.
If the pair are found guilty, the Traffic Police agent could face from two to eight years in prison, and the motorist up to two years, TVM reports.
