An unidentified gang today kidnapped the daughter of a restaurant owner in the city of Matola, Maputo province, Benjamina Chaves, provincial director of the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), told Lusa.
The victim, aged 26, was kidnapped at about 7 a.m. on the street of her residence in the city of Matola, moments after leaving home, said the provincial director of Sernic.
“We immediately deployed a police unit to the scene and investigations are underway to locate the victim and the abductors. It is a worrying situation and, at least at the level of Maputo province, it is the first time that the victim is a young woman,”stated Benjamina Chaves.
Since the beginning of 2020, Mozambican authorities have registered a total of 10 abductions, whose victims are businesspeople or their family members.
In July, the president of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA), Agostinho Vuma, was shot and wounded as he was leaving his office,in Baixa, centre of Maputo, in a case still to be clarified.
In October, a group of businesspeople in the city of Beira, Sofala province, central Mozambique, stopped their activities for three days in protest against the wave of abductions in the country.
“This is a manifestation of the indignant, but at the same time it is a collective appeal for the Mozambican State to, once and for all, present concrete, consistent and tangible results in the fight against this evil”, declared, at the time, businessman Zeyn Badati, speaking on behalf of the group during a press conference in the city of Beira.
