A National Statistics Institute (INE) statement released on Friday puts inflation in Mozambique from January to May at 8.47 percent, with monthly inflation in May slowing slightly by 0.22 percent from April’s 2.23 percent rise compared to 1.33 percent in March.
Meanwhile, according to the INE, Mozambique’s three major cities – Maputo in the south, Beira in the centre of the country and Nampula in the north, posted below-average price increases in May.
“The city of Maputo had below-average monthly inflation (-0.33 percent) and the cities of Beira and Nampula were above average with -0.16 percent and -0.09 percent respectively,” the press release says.
Power and non-alcoholic beverages dictated the inflationary trend in May, contributing to total accumulated inflation with about 6.81 positive percentage points.
