Mozambique: Healthcare workers suspend strike, give government until Thursday

The Mozambican health authorities on Friday[October 30] reported a further 252 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, the great majority of them from Maputo city and Maputo province.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 187,499 people in Mozambique have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 2,226 of them in the previous 24 hours.
Of the samples tested, 678 were from Maputo city, 592 from Cabo Delgado, 175 from Maputo province, 173 from Sofala, 97 from Nampula, 96 from Tete, 85 from Gaza, 41 from Zambezia, 17 from Niassa, 14 from Manica, and six from Inhambane.
1,974 of these tests gave negative results, and 252 people tested positive for the coronavirus. Since the first case was diagnosed, on 22 March, the number of positive cases has risen to 12,777.
Of the new cases, 237 are Mozambicans and six are foreign citizens (two South Africans, and one each from India, Turkey, Portugal and Eswatini). The nationality of nine cases has not yet been specified.
24 cases are children under 15 years of age and ten are more than 65 years old. No age information was available for 19 cases.
173 of the cases are from Maputo city, and 54 from Maputo province. Thus Maputo city and province account for 90 per cent of the new cases. There were also 11 cases from Tete, five from Manica, four from Gaza, three from Zambezia and two from Niassa.
In line with standard Ministry of Health procedure, all 252 new cases are now in home isolation, and their contacts are being traced.
The Ministry release said that, in the same 24 hour period, two Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital, both in Maputo city, but eight others were admitted (six in Maputo city and two in Zambezia). There are now 56 people under medical care in the Covid-19 isolation wards (51 in Maputo, three in Matola and two in Zambezia).
A further 436 people were declared completely free of Covid-19 (372 in Maputo city, 28 in Gaza, 19 in Manica, 14 in Niassa, and three in Gaza). To date, 10,437 people have made a full recovery, which is 81.7 per cent of all people diagnosed with the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
As of Friday, the geographical breakdown of all 12,777 positive cases, by the provinces where they were diagnosed, was as follows: Maputo city, 6,312; Maputo province, 2,284; Zambezia, 816; Cabo Delgado, 815; Nampula, 604; Tete, 429; Gaza, 427; Sofala, 401; Inhambane, 290; Niassa, 251; Manica, 148.
But only 2,245 cases are still active. The breakdown of these cases is: Maputo city, 1,661; Maputo province, 292, Cabo Delgado, 88; Sofala, 69; Gaza, 47; Tete, 27; Manica, 29; Zambezia, 16; Niassa, 11; Inhambane, nine; Nampula, five.
So between them, Maputo city and Maputo province account for 67 per cent of all the positive cases ever diagnosed, and 87 per cent of all active cases.
