Uganda last Thursday honoured Mozambique Defence Minister Atanasio Salvador M’tumuke with the Kagera Star at a celebration of the country’s 27th national heroes’ day in the town of Sii-Bukanja.
The Kagera Star is awarded to individuals who have contributed to the liberation of the Ugandan people and the Republic of Uganda and was bestowed in the recognition of the role played by the Republic of Mozambique in general, and the Minister of National Defence in particular, in supporting Uganda in its struggle for liberation from Idi Amin Dada’s regime and the accomplishment of the Ugandan peoples’ goals of peace and freedom.
The same honour was bestowed posthumously on Major Antonio Chicusse for his selfless devotion to the Ugandan cause.
At the ceremony itself, President General Youwiri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda spoke of the need for the coming generations to build on the relations of friendship and brotherhood that existed between former presidents Samora Machel and Julius Nyerere (Tanzania), who laid the foundations for the liberation of Uganda, and expressed his hope that the Ugandan people would never allow relations between Mozambique and Uganda to fall into neglect.
