President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi visited the province of Cabo Delgado on Friday to Saturday, including Macomia and Ibo districts, site of the terrorist attacks prevalent in the province since October 2017.
In a visit to the 3rd battalion of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) in the district of Macomia, Filipe Nyusi again attacked critics of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), making it clear that anyone who did not recognise the commitment of Mozambican troops did so “out of malice”, and registering his determination to find out just what any such person’s intentions were.
“We are attentive to your manoeuvres in the theatre. Above all, we are following this stage of Macomia daily, when you deploy and support Quissanga, support Muidumbe and, when necessary, Meluco. I flew very low over the areas where you operate, some with very dense bush, including their Cagembe base. I saw (…) the enemy in disarray. Usually, in a war like this, a small operation seems to be big, because it camouflages the numbers. It may be only three, four or five people. But the blows that you are inflicting on the enemy are known and recognised. Those who do not recognise them do it out of malice and we know these cases and the intentions they have,” Nyusi said at his meeting with the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) unit.
“The last operations were the population that reported to me. They personally say: our young people [forces] were there, our young people did that. Our young people need this. It is your parents, society, grandparents and young people who live here who report what each young person needs and when they need it. We are attentive, we are making progress. Naturally, you will not feel it all at once, but we are making progress towards providing resources so that we can create conditions for you to work better,” President Nyusi added.
“Continue to love your country, continue to love your people as you have sworn [to do], continue with courage, continue with loyalty, with discipline, continue also with bravery. (…) There is no difficult area, where I have a soldier, where there are troops, where I must not go. If my troops are there, I have to get there. We are here, we will continue to be and I will tell other commanders to be close to you and understand your concerns. Hit the enemy hard,” the head of state reiterated.
During the visit, Filipe Nyusi said he now understood more about how terrorists are leaving villages burnt, empty and abandoned. He argued that the time had come to step up operations to punish the enemy.
