A 25-year-old woman living in Chemba, in Sofala province in central Mozambique, has died after being attacked by a crocodile while fetching water from a river, local authorities announced on Wednesday.
With this incident, which took place on Monday, the number of deaths caused by crocodiles in the district so far this year rises to seven, according to the permanent district secretariat.
Locals use the river mainly for agricultural and fishing activities.
According to the latest data from Mozambique’s former Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development (MITADER), dating back to 2016, crocodiles and elephants are among the wild animals that claim the most victims in the country.
In 2016, at least 95 people died as a result of wild animal attacks in the country, of which 43 were by crocodiles and 10 by elephants.
