The President of the Tax Authority wants the Centre for Customs Studies to produce more information of practical use in combating smuggling and similar activities, which are estimated to cost the country some 12% of its GDP annually.
President of the Mozambican Tax Authority Amélia Muendane last August obtained a PhD in Strategic and International Studies with her thesis, “Economic Implications of Smuggling in Mozambique”.
Muendene’s thesis has now been summarised in a work entitled Collection of Strategic and Customs Studies, a six-chapter volume launched in Maputo last Friday.
Presenting the work, UP-Maputo rector Jorge Ferrão highlighted its importance in providing perspective on the area.
Amélia Muendane is happy with the book and hopes that the Centre for Customs and Tax Studies, which summarised the work, will continue to produce papers covering other areas.
According to Muendane’s thesis, smuggling costs Mozambique 12.6% of GDP annually. South Africa, India and China are among the largest smugglers of Mozambican products.
