Mozambican saxophonist Moreira Chonguiça yesterday presented to the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, his new saxophone brand, which is produced in Mozambique and aims to foster young people’s taste for music.
“This instrument is a feature of my brand; as well as playing, we want to insert ourselves within the musical instrument production value chain and inspire more young people to embrace an artistic career,” Chonguiça said after the reception at the Presidency in Maputo.
Chonguiça hopes to add more instruments to his catalogue soon, expanding access to musical instruments in Mozambique.
The Mozambican head of state found the Chonguiça project positive, and hoped more artists would launch initiatives to encourage the youth to embrace music.
“As a government, we will always invest in the cultural sector as a whole. Young people have a duty to take the initiative in introducing new ways of thinking about the country, because they are in the majority here,” President Nyusi said.
Moreira Chonguiça, 43, is one of Mozambique’s most famous musicians, both here and in South Africa, where he obtained a degree in musicology. He has recorded seven albums to date.
Chonguiça’s entertainment company established the “More Jazz Series”, which has brought numerous international jazz artists to Mozambique and maintains a long-standing tradition in the Mozambican music scene.
