Police in Nampula have made one of the largest-ever drug seizures in the province after stopping a container lorry in Ribaue on the night of 14 October.
A preliminary search revealed nothing, but the PRM agents were not wholly satisfied and sent the vehicle to PRM Provincial Command in Nampula city for further investigation. It was there that a more thorough search revealed a false bottom concealing 343 one-kilogram packages.
A team of SERNIC experts ascertained that 185 of the packages were crack cocaine, and 158 of them, heroin.
According to Nampula PRM spokesman Zacarias Nacute, the drugs came from Cabo Delgado province. Their intended destination remains unclear.
The PRM seized the vehicle and detained the driver, a naturalised Mozambican born in Tanzania, and a Mozambican national accompanying him.
The search also netted 119,420.00 meticais in cash, three cell phones and various documents, the police report.
The detainees have so far refused to supply any clarification regarding the drugs or their destination, but the PRM spokesperson said further investigations were underway.
