President Filipe Nyusi had a telephone conversation yesterday with his Botswana counterpart, Mokgweetsi Masisi, concerning security in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and especially terrorism and other threats.
These phenomena threaten both countries and the southern region in general, and the two leaders have committed to consulting and supporting each other in the exercise of their SADC functions.
During the call, the Mozambican head of state congratulated President Mokgweetsi Masisi, on his election as incumbent chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
The two heads of state exchanged information about the Covid-19 situation, the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, and the prevention and mitigation measures being observed in both countries.
President Nyusi and President Maissi also exchanged information on the prevailing security situation in the SADC, with an emphasis on terrorism and other threats in both countries and in the region in general.
The two heads of state shared views on their participation in the Commonwealth and their cooperation within the framework of that international organisation, of which both countries are full members.
To properly monitor bilateral and multilateral cooperation issues, the two statesmen agreed to exchange visits by delegations to work on the details.
Both Presidents pledged to continue to hold consultations and to support each other in the exercise of their functions as Chair of the SADC [President Nyusi] and chairperson of the SADC Organ Troika [Prescient Maisis].
