Mozambique: Mpox cases in Niassa rise

The Mozambican Ministry of Health announced today another death of a patient with Covid-19, which raises the cumulative to 72, having also registered 87 new infections.
The victim is a 51-year-old Mozambican man who was admitted to a hospital in the city of Maputo, where he died on Sunday “after his clinical condition worsened,” said Benigna Matsinhe, deputy director of public health, in updating data on pandemic at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.
The authorities announced yet another 87 positive cases of the new coronavirus, which bring the total number of cases to 10,088, of which 9,789 are locally transmitted and 299 are imported.
“Of the total cases announced today, eight are children under the age of 5,” said Benigna Matsinhe.
Eighty six of the newly diagnosed patients are Mozambican nationals and one is Zimbabwean.
The health authorities have announced yet another 212 people reported as recovered, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 7,550 (74%), while 43 patients are currently hospitalised in isolation centres.
“Of the hospitalised patients, 15 are in a serious condition and two are in a critical condition”, she said.
Of the total of 2,462 active infections in the country, the city of Maputo has the highest number, with 1,586 active cases. It is followed by Maputo province, with 561 active cases, and the remaining provinces register less than 100 cases.
The country has cumulatively tested a total of 155,202 suspected cases since the announcement of the first case on March 22.
Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Mozambique has the highest number of cases, while Angola leads in number of deaths.
Angola records 218 deaths and 6,366 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 5,063 cases), Mozambique (72 deaths and 10,088 cases), Cape Verde (75 deaths and 7,072 cases), Guinea-Bissau (41 deaths and 2,389 cases) ) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 deaths and 928 cases).
