In a setback to planned reintegration processes, employers are declining the offer of prison labour.
According to the National Penitentiary Service, the placing of inmates in the productive sector is part of their reintegration but is not meeting with employers’ approval. Of the more than 11,000 convicted, only 128 had any employment, 91 male and 37 female.
SERNAP director Eduardo Mussanhane reports that three workshops held in Manica, Inhambane and Gaza provinces to alert business owners to the possibility of hiring prison labour had not had the desired response.
“We continue to work to counter this situation, since this is one of the components of prisoners’ rehabilitation,” Mussanhane said.
Nevertheless, 942 hectares of corn and rice were cultivated by inmates in the 2014/15 campaign, resulting in a harvest of 659,400 tons of cereal, while the 371 hectares planted with rice yielded 259,700 tonnes. The rice harvest was best in Chilembene, in Chokwe district, Gaza province.
