The former President of the Mozambican League of Human Rights and stalwart of the defence, protection and promotion of human rights in Mozambique was this week honoured during the launch of the National Network of Human Rights Defenders.
“I apologise for all those that I offended and that caused the League to wind up. Today the Mozambican people are suffering. Today I am without strength to defend those Mozambicans whose land is being expropriated, I am without strength to defend the poor,” a visibly moved Alice Mabota said.
In her short speech, Mabota recalled that she herself fought for the establishment of a mechanism to protect human rights defenders in Mozambique. So it was with great joy that she was witnessing the launch of the new network. “I never actually took the bullets – only threats. But there are people who took [the bullets], and had no place where they could find protection.”
“Today, I work for the society, but without strength to help everyone who needs help, as when I was in the Mozambican League of Human Rights. I am an advocate for the Human Rights Defenders Network. I lived with people who were running away from politicians”, said Alice Mabote. pic.twitter.com/yMU2355Xly
