With an average of four deaths a day, Mozambique is among the Southern African Development Community’s five worst countries for deaths on the roads, and in the top 25 worldwide.
The data is contained in a report entitled “Mortality by Road Accidents” by the Transportation Research Institute of the University of Michigan, which examined 193 countries.
Mozambique thus joins countries like Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, Sudan and Equatorial Guinea.
Data over the last 10 years showed a downward trend between 2005 and 2012, but rose from 2012 to 2014.
This year, the numbers are again back up at a level the provokes concern. The National Institute of Land Transport says that of an average of six road accidents per day, four people die.
