President Nyusi announced this Wednesday that the government would “tighten inspection and accountability” of coronavirus prevention measures in response to the increasing numbers of people infected, especially in the city of Maputo, where the hospital capacity is already stretched.
“When we said we were going to relax confinement, some people thought the disease was over. It is not over; it is killing even more [people],” the head of state said “Some of our fellow citizens, when they are on the beaches, behave as if the pandemic is already under control, and do not observe any preventive measures,” he added.
“I am not yet saying that the beaches are closed. And I should do that, because I was advised to. But I have faith in the conscience of Mozambicans and of everyone who lives in Mozambique,” the president clarified.
But, because of the anomalies “that we saw last week, we will, starting today, tighten up inspection and accountability measures”.
The Minister of Education and Human Development, though, would “still today talk about how the resumption of classes”, and “the Minister of the Interior will communicate which specific tightening measures” will be taken, “above all in the inspection aspect”.
Speaking at the launch of a renewable energy initiative, the head of state noted that “a country cannot develop without its people being healthy”, while complaining that preventive and restrictive measures designed to “delay the peak of the pandemic” and protect the national health system were “not being properly implemented”.
