The government of Nampula province plans to build a port for tuna fishing as part of the national program to capitalize on the highly valuable marine species.
Nampula governor Victor Borges said that the project already had the “moral blessing” of the port, which is expected to be built in the coastal district of Memba.
“The next step will be to mobilize partners interested in helping the government of Nampula raise the necessary funds to drive the strategic plan for a tuna fishery off the Nampula coast forward,” Borges is quoted by Nampula newspaper Wamphula fax as saying.
About 13 tons of the total 20 tons that make up the country’s annual tune catch are caught off Nampula’s 450-kilometer long coast
Tuna is plentiful off the coasts of Nacala-Porto and Memba districts and parts of Mogincual and Liupo. In the two latter regions, catch volumes have not been greater only because the species is not much liked by local communities.
Methods used by fishermen in the area to catch tuna are reportedly rudimentary, and production volumes do not reflect the potential of the species.
The Nacala International Airport business plan calls for the provision of land to the private sector interested in the construction of tuna processing units.
