Ossufo Momade, the leader of Mozambique’s main opposition party, Renamo, on Sunday complained of “political intolerance” against Renamo members, but reiterated his commitment to uphold the peace agreement he signed last year with President Filipe Nyusi.
Speaking in Maputo airport, after returning to the capital after a tour of the central provinces, Momade said Renamo members are being harassed, and the party’s symbols are being destroyed. This, he warned, endangered the coexistence between political parties, which could affect peace, which he regarded as “a common asset that should be defended by all”.
Renamo, said Momade, believes that a healthy environment should be created to preserve the peace and reconciliation agreement he and Nyusi had signed.
“We cannot retreat. The Mozambican people do not need any more violence”, he declared. “We need to keep the peace in Mozambique. Renamo is doing its part. Leave Renamo members alone! There is political harassment, and our adversaries are using community leaders to create problems for our members”.
Momade added that Renamo is handing over its weapons, under the agreement on the demobilisation and disarming of its “residual forces”, and he could find no explanation for why his party is suffering political harassment at a time when efforts should converge on maintaining peace.
Despite this situation, Momade said he was pleased at the work undertaken by Renamo in the central region, and was optimistic that Renamo would do well in the 2023 municipal elections, and in the general elections scheduled for 2024.
