Seven people in central Mozambique’s Zambézia province died when they accidentally detonated an explosive device they had found, a police source told Lusa today.
“The victims found the device on the 14th, while out poaching. They took it home and tried to open it with a key, and it exploded,” said Sidner Lonzo, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Zambézia.
According to Lonzo, the blow applied in an attempt to open the device detonated it, and “instantly killed the seven people who were around”. All seven men belonged to the same community in Pebane district, Zambézia.
Police cannot as yet specify the exact nature of the device, but say that investigations are ongoing.
“We have dispatched our experts to find out what happened and identify the type of explosive device involved,” the PRM spokesman concluded.
