Prices for goods and services increased by 2.75 percent in August, compared to the same month last year. Food, tobacco, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages were the main contributors to the rise in the cost of living.
In real terms, this means that anyone spending 5,000 meticais on a basket of necessary goods and services in August 2019 had to find an additional 137.5 meticais for the same goods and services this year.
According to information shared by the National Statistics Institute (INE) at a press conference in Maputo on Wednesday, food and non-alcoholic drinks prices increased by 7.52 percent, and alcoholic and tobacco prices by 5.75 percent.
“The city of Beira led the trend of increasing the general price level with approximately 3.65 percent, followed by the city of Nampula with approximately 3.31 percent and finally the city of Maputo with 2.16 percent,” the INE Consumer Price Index report reveals.
