Mozambican Customs in Nampula has seized more than eight tons of crab, a quantity of a substance used to produce a forbidden drug, 21,000 rolls of capulana fabric and diverse alcoholic beverages.
A plane bound for Nairobi, Kenya, suffered a long delay on Friday when Customs aborted an attempt to export 8.6 tons of live crab.
The owner of the goods did not submit the bank commitment statement required by the authorities, a document that, for a certain export, guarantees that the country, through the Bank of Mozambique, will receive a transfer in dollars from the buyer – a procedure aimed at capturing foreign exchange – Tax Authority delegate in Nampula Clayton Johnan explained.
For air transport alone, the seized crab consignment would be worth four million meticais. Ken Feng, of “Forever Winner”, the company about to export the product to China, said it was a victim of the bank’s slowness.
Also seized in the cargo section of Nampula International Airport was a quantity of a prohibited drug arriving from Nairobi and destined for Nampula.
In another development, 21,000 rolls of capulana fabric that entered the country without the necessary customs being paid were seized, as also was a quantity of alcoholic beverages that were already on the premises of a well-known supermarket chain.
