Mozambique has registered 113 new cases of the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, lifting the cumulative total to 4,557, while the number of deaths is unchanged at 27, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday in a statement.
The new cases detected in the 24 hours to midnight on Sunday were among 2,006 people tested for the virus in that period.
Of the newly diagnosed cases, 112 cases are individuals of Mozambican nationality and one (1) case is of a foreigner of Indian nationality. Of these, 111 are locally transmitted and two (2) cases are imported. The imported cases are of two (2) citizens of Mozambican nationality coming from South Africa ”, reads the MISAU communiqué quote by ‘O País’.
The 113 people now diagnosed with the coronavirus are all now isolating at home and their contacts being traced, according to the ministry statement.
In all, Mozambique has seen 101 people treated in hospital for Covid-19, with 19 under medical care in isolation centres.
In the preceding 24 hours, the country has recorded 82 more patients deemed to have fully recovered, for a total so far of 2,697.
As of Monday, Mozambique has 1,829 active coronavirus cases. The city of Maputo has most, at 1,085, followed by Maputo province, with 199, Cabo Delgado with 186, Nampula with 161, Niassa with 86 and Sofala with 48.
The country’s other five provinces each have 23 or fewer cases.
Since the first case was recorded in Mozambique, the country has tested 106,383 suspected cases and traced just over two million people. There are 4,681 people currently isolating at home and 2,742 contacts of positive cases being followed up.
Worldwide, the Covid-19 pandemic has so far caused at least 889,498 deaths and infected more than 27.1 million people in 196 countries and territories.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
