The Mozambican health authorities on Saturday announced the diagnosis of a further 76 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, the great majority of them in Maputo City, which is now clearly the epicentre of the Mozambican outbreak.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, since the start of the pandemic, 102,456 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 568 of them in the previous 24 hours.
All these tests were held in public laboratories. 178 were from Maputo province, 131 from Maputo city, 122 from Nampula, 77 from Cabo Delgado, 21 from Zambezia, 19 from Sofala, 14 from Tete, five from Inhambane and one from Niassa.
492 of the samples tested negative for the coronavirus, but 76 people tested positive. This brings the total number of positive cases, since the first case was diagnosed on 2 March, to 4,341. 74 of the new cases are Mozambicans, one is a Malawian and one a Brazilian. Five are children under the age of 15.
56 of the new cases (74 per cent) are from Maputo city, and ten are from Maputo province (five from Matola city, three from Marracuene district, one from Moamba and one from Namaacha). Four cases are from Beira, and three are from Nampula (two from Nampula city and one from Mogovolas). One case is from the Niassa provincial capital, Lichinga (the only Niassa sample tested in the last 24 hours), one is from Quelimane, capital of Zambezia, and one is from the town of Montepuez, in Cabo Delgado.
In line with standard Health Ministry procedure, all the new cases are in home isolation, and their contacts are being traced.
The Ministry release added that currently 17 Covid-19 patients are hospitalized, 16 in Maputo city and one in Tete.
Over the same 24 hour period, a further 68 people made a full recovery from Covid-19 (44 in Maputo province, 15 in Sofala, eight in Inhambane and one in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 2,579 (59.4 per cent of all those who have tested positive in Mozambique).
As of Saturday the geographical break down of all 4,341 positive cases, by the provinces where they were diagnosed, was as follows: Maputo City, 1,592; Maputo province, 805; Cabo Delgado, 608; Nampula, 545; Gaza, 174; Sofala, 164; Niassa, 121; Manica, 93; Inhambane, 92; Tete, 85; Zambezia, 61.
Between them, Maputo city and province account for 55.2 per cent of all cases diagnosed since the start of the pandemic, and 67.6 per cent of all active cases. The epidemic is clearly picking up speed in Maputo, while it appears to be on the wane in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula, which were previous hotspots.
The key Covid-19 statistics for Mozambique are now: 4,341 cases, of whom 2,579 have made a complete recovery, and 1,732 are active cases. 30 Covid-19 patients have died, 26 from the disease, and four from other causes.
