The academic and former president of the National Commission of Elections in Mozambique (CNE), Brazão Mazula, advised politicians today to remove the negative stains on the multiparty democracy in Mozambique, because they diminish the worth of elections in Mozambique.
Speaking at a roundtable on “Multiparty Democracy: Paths, Gains and Lessons”, organised within the scope of the celebrations of the 30 Years of Multiparty Democracy in Mozambique, Mazula cites the armed conflict in the centre of the country, the recent arson attack on Canal de Mozambique, “death squads” and the marginalisation of vulnerable groups such as street children as among the situations that tarnish the 30 years of multiparty democracy in Mozambique.
“It is difficult to understand that, after 30 years of multiparty democracy, we still have to solve social and political problems based on weapons, as in the centre of the country,” Mazula said.
“It is difficult to comprehend the death of a person being thought out and planned, or damage to the media, such as happened a long time ago with the fire at STV and, more recently, at Canal de Moçambique. Just because people think differently, when the metabolism of multiparty democracy is precisely this difference in ideas. The richness of democracy itself lies precisely in the freedom of choice and information, which allows us to discuss together the best ways to develop the country,” he added.
According to the academic, the exercise of freedom of expression is a constitutional right and includes, among others, the ability to disseminate ideas through all legal means. “Hence, as much as those who think, who plan, who orchestrate their legal reasonings, the executioners, those who carry out the order to kill or damage the property of others, public or private, and those who absolve the executors, all are criminals,” he concludes.
