Police agent Rafael Alberto Manjate was accidentally shot and killed by a colleague in the Sinacura neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city of Quelimane early on morning Wednesday, during an operation to capture alleged malefactors.
Aged 28 and born in Chongoene district, Gaza province, Manjate was Chief of Operations for the 1st Police Station in Quelimane, Zambézia province.
Zambezia police spokesman Sidner Lonzo said the accident occurred on an unlit road, when one of the agents opened fire on suspected criminals.
In order to establish the exact circumstances, all agents involved are being investigated by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), and the agent responsible for the actual shooting is currently under arrest.
Sidner Lonzo described Rafael Manjate as an assiduous, tenacious and reliable agent, adding that the PRM had lost a member deeply committed to maintaining order and security in the provincial capital of Zambézia.
Last Friday, one PRM agent was shot dead and another was injured in Maputo, when the pair approached four people sitting in a parked Toyota Auris at a filling station, who had aroused their suspicions.
