Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (SDS) must continue to protect citizens, public and private institutions, reinforcing their readiness to defend territorial integrity, a statement from the Frelimo Political Commission cited by Radio Mozambique indicates.
The Political Commission also urges the population to remain vigilant and collaborate with the authorities, denouncing any act that endangers the tranquillity of public life.
In an ordinary session led by the President of Frelimo and President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, the body analysed the current political, economic and socio-cultural situation in the country.
The Frelimo Political Commission says that the government is positively implementing measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, which nevertheless continues to cause new infections and deaths in the country.
In the statement, the Political Commission also acknowledges the role of authorities and health professionals and calls on all citizens to comply with government Covid-19 prevention measures.

Under the direction of Comrade FILIPE JACINTO NYUSI, President of FRELIMO and President of the Republic of Mozambique, the 51st Ordinary Session of the Political Commission took place on September 2, 2020, at FRELIMO National Headquarters, to analyse the current political , economic and socio-cultural situation of the country.
1. The Political Commission commends the Government of the Republic of Mozambique for having successfully hosted the 40th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), held for the first time, in virtual format, under the motto: “40 Years Building Peace and Security, Promoting Development and Resilience in the Face of Global Challenges”, which contributed to the strengthening of solidarity among the peoples of the Southern Africa Region.
2. The Political Commission congratulates Comrade President FILIPE JACINTO NYUSI, for the assumption of the SADC Presidency at this Summit that served for member countries to discuss, among other matters, the strategy for preventing and combating cross-border crime, with a greater impact on terrorism in its most varied forms and manifestations, where Mozambique and the other member countries saw the violent extremism that occurs in the province of Cabo Delgado, as a threat to the entire region.
3. The Political Commission was informed about the state of emergency situation, in the context of Covid-19, and congratulates the Government on the implementation of measures to contain the spread of the Pandemic, which continues to cause new infections and deaths in the country, taking into account that Mozambique has not yet reached the peak of new infections.
4. The Political Commission reiterates its salute to the authorities and health professionals for their selfless delivery in the exercise of their functions and calls on all citizens to scrupulously comply with the Government’s recommendations on the prevention and propagation measures of Covid-19.
5. The Political Commission considers the decision to be the one that best serves the interests of the people and that can ensure the necessary balance between restrictive measures, the gradual relaunch of economic and social activity in the country and the safeguarding of citizens’ lives.
6. The Political Commission commends the Government for the launch, in the province of Cabo Delgado, of the Integrated Development Agency of the North (ADIN), a public institution with the purpose of coordinating social and economic development actions.
7. The Political Commission was informed about the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic and welcomes the performance of the FRELIMO Parliamentary Bench, for the appreciation and approval of the presidential decree declaring the New State of Emergency, in the context of Covid-19, as well as the Disaster Management Law, which will make the management of measures to prevent and combat the novel coronavirus more flexible, in the context of the New Normal.
8. The Political Commission salutes Comrade President FILIPE JACINTO NYUSI for visits to all provinces and the City of Maputo, to monitor the implementation of the Government’s Five-Year Program and inaugurate several social and economic infrastructures, the results of which are reflected in the improvement of the living conditions of the populations, with emphasis on the water supply systems under the PRAVIDA Program and the inauguration of the Nampula-Nametil road that will contribute to accelerate the development of the province.
9. The Political Commission encourages the Defence and Security Forces to remain committed to their mission to protect citizens, public and private institutions by reinforcing their readiness to defend territorial integrity. It urges the population to remain vigilant and collaborative with the authorities, denouncing any act that endangers the tranquillity of the citizens.
