Mozambique: Transporters return to operating in KaTembe
The Mozambican Tax Authority in Sofala at the weekend seized 7,000 boxes of sound equipment on the grounds of attempted tax evasion.
The goods, the Tax Authority says, were imported from China and unloaded at the Port of Beira under false documentation.
The spokesman for the Mozambican Tax Authority in central Mozambique, António Camacho, said that the goods were declared as around 1,000 units and accessories, but inspection proved them to be over 7,000 devices, thus constituting a crime of false statement.
Camacho says that the misappropriation, if successful, would have cost the state about one million meticais.
The owner of the goods denies any attempt to evade tax, insisting upon the authenticity of the documents.
This is the third time in two months that allegedly smuggled merchandise has been seized in the Port of Beira.
