The office of Mozambican First Lady, Isaura Nyusi, is today sending donations on a Mozambican Cabotage Society ship, to support families displaced by the armed violence in Cabo Delgado.
The support comprises food for displaced families in accommodation centres in the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, a note from the Presidency reads.
“These donations consist of three twenty-foot containers, with final destination Nacala, Nampula province, and two forty-foot containers, with final destination the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado province, all containing various food products,” the note details.
According to the United Nations, armed violence has led to the flight of 250,000 people from districts affected by insecurity in the north of the province.
The provincial capital, Pemba, has been the main refuge for people seeking refuge, but others have fled to other districts and even provinces in the region, especially Nampula.
Armed violence in the province of Cabo Delgado, where the largest private investment for natural gas exploration in Africa (led by Total) is situated, has already killed at least 1,059 people in almost three years, in addition to much destruction of infrastructure.
The Mozambican Cabotage Society, which is revitalizing coastal cargo shipping, is owned by the French logistics group Peschaud (75%) and the state-owned Transmarítima (25%).
