The executive editor of the Mozambique weekly Canal, Matias Guente, will be questioned on 2 September as part of a case in which he is accused of exposing state secrets, the journalist told Lusa on Friday.
Matias Guente said he was notified for an interrogation related to the texts the weekly wrote about a contract between the Mozambican government and the US multinational Anadarko for the security of natural gas projects in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique.
The texts were published in March this year and the contract between the government and Anadarko was signed in February last year.
The presence of Matias Guente at the Maputo city prosecutor’s office will be the second in the process in which he is accused of exposing state secrets.
The executive editor Canal had already been heard on 10 July in this case.
Last Sunday, the Canal newsroom was destroyed in a fire that the management of the newspaper attributed to arson and which has already deserved a strong wave of national and international repudiation.
According to the newspaper’s management, unknown people set fire to the newsroom, and cans were found inside the premises, one of which still has some fuel.
The authors of the fire allegedly introduced the fuel drums inside the newspaper’s facilities, after breaking into the front door of the space.
The province of Cabo Delgado, which hosts multinationals involved in natural gas projects, has been the scene since October 2017 of attacks by armed groups classified by the Mozambican government and international entities as terrorists.
The armed violence has already caused the death of at least 1,059 people in almost three years, in addition to the destruction of various infrastructures.
According to the United Nations, the attacks have led to the flight of 250,000 people from insecure districts further north in the province.
